Take a look in your closet. Most of what you see didn’t come from the mind of a disconnected designer. Half of it has roots in the American military, the world’s most prolific (albeit accidental) style research and development lab.
From chinos and bomber jackets to T-shirts and thermals, the most essential pieces in modern menswear began as military gear. They were standard-issue staples first, with straightforward utility: to withstand extreme climates and grueling conditions.
These pieces and countless others were refined through decades of field-testing before they infiltrated the civilian market via a post-WWII surplus boom. Today, many of the best pieces still honor this lineage, using the Armed Forces’ original blueprints while adapting them for everyday life.
