The TV host and John Oliver once joked that the comments section of Venmo is the only social media that really matters. “That’s where the real drama is,” Oliver said.
This is especially true when it comes to golf. Never mind the swing videos or pictures of greens at sunset some of us post. If you want the unvarnished truth about someone’s golf life, check to see if they’re getting paid after golf more than they’re paying, or if it’s the other way around.
Unless, of course, that person is ducking out on their bets altogether, a dynamic my colleague Christopher Powers addresses in his latest Stupid Golf Problems column. As Chris notes, the problem is rarely the money itself, because if you’re depending on money owed from a Sunday morning golf game, you either need to address other life decisions, or you’re playing for too much money to begin with. The real issue with golf partners who aren’t paying off their bets, either via Venmo or cash, is they're creating a stress the rest of us don’t need. It’s lame to have to ask for it, but perhaps even lamer to let it go. So what is the solution? Chris has a good one, which I’ll let him explain.
