This week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow allows Rory McIlroy an opportunity to pursue a sixth major championship at a venue where he’s enjoyed abundant success. Yet to have expectations of a major Sunday as dramatic as a month ago is seemingly certain to end in disappointment.
CBS analyst Dottie Pepper walked inside the ropes for every step of McIlroy’s win at Augusta National and penned a first-person account of the historic round. Pepper provides color, commentary and analysis on what she saw and all the stuff that TV couldn’t pick up—the observations that can only be made after spending five hours just a few feet away from history.
With all the context of recent near misses, McIlroy’s win was as much a victory over himself as it was against Bryson DeChambeau or Justin Rose. Dr. Bob Rotella, Rory’s mental coach, writes “Rory and I never talked about winning the Masters.” The golf psychologist provides insight into how McIlroy got over the line and why he believes that McIlroy won the Masters on Friday night.
