The longevity field moves fast. This issue brings you new tools for measuring biological age, smarter ways to evaluate your food, NAD+ science in one of the country’s biggest newspapers, and more. We highlight
Facial Age Analysis, an optional feature for Index that offers an instant estimate of visual age. Also in this issue: Dr. Leonard Guarente's upcoming TEDxMIT talk (sign up if you're in the Boston area), the
Los Angeles Times turns to Elysium to learn about
oral supplementation with NAD+ precursors, what the science says about NAD+ IV therapy, and insights from an NPR segment on ultra-processed foods featuring Elysium Scientific Advisory Board
Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Dr.P.H.

In a recent feature from the
Los Angeles Times, Amy Chang explored the growing interest in NAD+ therapies and supplements, checking theories and wellness hype against rigorous, research backed science. She talked to Elysium co-founder and chief scientist, Dr. Guarente, who emphasized the importance of
NAD+ precursors entering the body through oral supplementation, not IVs.
“NAD+ itself doesn’t efficiently enter cells,” he explains.
“That’s why we focus on precursors like NR and NMN. Cells can convert those into NAD+.”

This spring, Elysium co-founder and chief scientist Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., will take the stage at
TEDxMIT, one of the world’s most influential forums for new ideas in science and technology. A pioneer in the biology of aging, Dr. Guarente’s research helped uncover the role of sirtuins and NAD+ in aging—discoveries that helped launch the modern longevity field. The event will take place at the MIT Museum on Saturday, April 11 from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM EDT.

Facial Age Analysis: a new way to track aging with Index
Elysium is leading the next generation of longevity measurement with
Facial Age Analysis, a new optional feature that complements your Index report with an instant estimate of visual age. Simply opt in during kit registration and take a photo through your device’s camera. In seconds, you’ll receive a facial age estimate. Your photo will also contribute to cutting-edge research exploring the connection between visible aging and biological markers.

puts ultra-processed foods to the test with Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Dr.P.H.

| “Morning Edition” from NPR explores two simple checks for ultra-processed carbs: look for at least 1 gram of fiber per 10 grams of carbs on the label, and soak the food in water—minimally processed grains hold together while ultra-processed ones dissolve. The segment features
Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., Dr.P.H., cardiologist and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and member of the Elysium Scientific Advisory Board. "When people ask me about ultra-processed foods, they're often most confused about grains, carbohydrates, and starches," he said. "People want to know how to choose more healthful versions of these products." The two tests can help people make more informed decisions and avoid ultra-processed foods that can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, depression, and obesity.

What the science says about NAD+ IV therapy
NAD+ IV therapy has gained popularity at wellness clinics and “drip” bars, often promoted for energy, recovery, and detox. But what does the
research actually show? While NAD+ is essential for cellular energy and metabolic function, current evidence suggests that IV-administered NAD+ is rapidly broken down and excreted, with no clear proof it enters cells, where it’s needed most. In contrast, oral supplementation with NAD+ precursors like NR and NMN has been clinically shown to safely and effectively increase cellular NAD+ levels. It’s why oral supplements like
Basis and
Signal are proven to boost NAD+ levels by 40%.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
I started taking Basis when I was younger and after a few years I just took it for granted and I stopped. I have been taking it for a few years now again in my 50s along with Signal. I can feel the difference more now—especially after strenuous exercise on recovery days.
