New study: Beneficial effects of NR and PT in a sun exposure model

A research collaboration between Elysium Health and Weill Cornell Medicine recently published a study demonstrating the benefits of
nicotinamide riboside (NR) and
pterostilbene (PT) in a preclinical model of sun exposure.
Dr. Richard Granstein, chair of the Department of Dermatology at Weill Cornell Medicine and Elysium Health Scientific Advisory Board member, served as the principal investigator.

The study exposed mice to UVB, the high energy component of sunlight that impacts the outermost layer of the skin, and saw decreased tissue swelling and immune suppression in mice fed with NRPT compared to control. UVB radiation causes inflammatory effects (assessed as tissue swelling) and suppression of the normal immune response in the skin. Interestingly, the beneficial effects of NRPT were greater than treatment with NR or PT alone, demonstrating a synergistic effect between the two compounds in the skin’s response. Further research is required to determine if these benefits can be extended to humans.

Index users already know what many
Wall Street Journal readers found out this month—that it’s now possible to measure the biological age of different
systems, including your heart. Personal health and wellness reporter Alex Janin covers the technology available to measure heart aging (including Index) and speaks to experts about the potential value in monitoring personal health.
“It’s an extension of our newfound obsession with ‘biological age,’ the concept that your body, or parts of it, can be physically aging faster or slower than your actual age,” she writes.
“And that by knowing those ages, you can take control to live longer and healthier.”

Heart age is still a very new measure in clinical practice, but some top doctors are already taking an interest. Janin cites Dr. Samuel Kim, director of preventive cardiology at Weill Cornell Medicine, who says that bringing heart age information to appointments can be a great conversation starter—and create the opportunity to proactively address heart health.
