Today marks 8 years of Backdrop. Thank you for being here.

I recently launched one of my most personal projects since starting Backdrop:BACKGROUND CHECK, a new biannual zine. It's not a catalog. We're not trying to sell you pages of things. It's a project born purely out of curiosity and the joy of making something from nothing.

One of my favorite parts of building Backdrop has always been the people I've met along the way. I've never been particularly interested in staying within the lines of one creative industry. Bringing together people from different worlds, whether that's fashion, music, art, or design, has always been part of what makes this fun for me. BACKGROUND CHECK is a continuation of that curiosity, just in print.

For our first cover, we were lucky enough to have Salehe Bembury, one of my favorite designers, whose world of color and texture feels so distinctly his own. Inside, there's everything from the extraordinary ornamental work of former Dries Van Noten designer Marijke De Cock to David Michon's exploration of the wonderfully strange world of home protection.

It's a little bit of everything. A snack, or HIIT for print.

Eight years in, I'm reminded that the best part of building something is realizing there's still so much more you want to make.
